The babble of a middle-aged lunatic.
Theres been some talk concerning points a bit in the last week or so. Have a look around and you can see the various posts.

I got to thinking about it, and decided that this was worth a new post.

Draginol's access class of 9 really gives him a significant edge. In a couple of the scoring schemes, one's access class is squared and/or multiplied against.

Interesting=Your access class squared.
Insightful = 2 X Your access class squared

For example:

Draginol posts an article, and a user gives him an insightful rating> 2(9^2)= 162 points (for an insightful click)
Xythe posts an article, and a user gives him an insightful rating> 2(1^2)= 2 points (for an insughtful click)
Gideon posts an article and a user gives him an insightful rating> 2(3^2)= 18 points (for an insightful click)

Wow! (162) points vs. (18) vs.(2) points for an insightful click. I'm not really certain we are all playing on the same turf here.

I found it also interesting that nearly all the top JU users have an access level greater than 1 (citizen). Ironically, many of these folks say they do not care about the scoring system. I can see why. Why worry when your at the top, and most users being at access level one really have little hope in catching them because of the scoring scheme.

What does one need to do to raise her/his access level so as to be playing on a level playing field?

I might be mistaken on some of this. If so, please kindly correct me.

I don't see how anyone got the idea that access level increased the number of points you GET when you get an insightful.

I'm seeing that I misunderstood something I read here Baker. I'll stipulate to that. All and mighty Super Elite Joe User Sir

So you know I'm only joking Baker, it's the way I read you that impresses greatly me, not your title I don't see why you do not right a book or something. Your just awsome!

There are quite a few awsome people on JU, in fact, many of them have participated in this thread. JU impresses me, for whatever thats worth.

On a serious note - Brad's mentioned in the past that he chooses articles that he believes are well written, interesting or just deserve a little more exposure than it would normally get bcause of the author's lack of noteriety. It's not necessarily because he agrees with the articles (otherwise some of the more liberal folks would never get featured).

This is the feeling I had as well.

I am not judging the administration here, from what I have seen it's really good.

There is just a lack of documentation, which IMHO falls directly inline with many Stardock services/products, paid or otherwise.

Thanks Chaos!

then it makes it possible to rig the scoring from that perspective. one could boost up like minded folk while giving undeserved "troll" ratings when they only disagree.

We need to use the honor system Sean.

Now that I understand a bit better, that may be one reason the Admins. keep so many at access level 1 (citizen). There cirizens stay until they show they are responsible enough to not only honor the honor system, but actually use it as well.

and i don't think xythe is naive enough to believe everything in life is and should be fair, but i think that it is disturbing to learn that things aren't as they appear.

Not really, since we are limited in the NUMBER of interesting/insightful/trolling ratings to give in any one day.

Excellent point.

LW, I also agree that if one is looking to manipulate the scoring system, then your spending far to much time thinking about it; obsessing.

That's as simple as I can make it.

That pretty much seems to be all there is to know?

Personally I enjoy your blogs Mason without having to be bored to do so! Even more so when you include our good friend Socrates!

Ditto.

Most people like your blogs Mason, thats why your blog is in the top 10.

I personally like a bit more than your blog. I like many of the responses you leave on other blogs as well.

On the whole, your a pretty likable guy

You can't score your own blogs.

I can't benefit from my access because I can't give points to my own blog.

If you give someone an insightful, those points don't count towards your blog, they count towards that user which is a seperate list.

The reason my blogs get so many points is becuase they ar read by so many people.

I have a far better view now Draginol. Thanks for not being offended.

Ok weve talked about the honor system here.

Has this article proved insightful or interesting in your eyes?

How many of you guys actually use the insightful/interesting button?

Now that I know how it works, I'll be using it more from now on and using it fairly as well.

I'm asking what is the criteria for gaining a higher access,

Brad has said in the past that higher levels are granted to people who "contribute to the community."

Mine was upped after a database crash caused Brad to lose all the (really good) comments on an article and I was able to restore them from my browser cache.

My advice is, be a good, consistent, contributing member of the community. Eventually you'll get the recognition.

In nearly 3 years here, I think I've only used the article rating thing maybe 2 or 3 times.

I rarely use the comment trolling/insightful either. Something has to be really insightful or trolling for me to bother. I know some people use it for spite against people they don't like (or to prop up those they do), but that's not my style.

maybe once a week. On comments, maybe once a day. As for the Trolling, very seldom, since most of the trolling comments are anons anyway.

That's cuz I ain't been doing my necessary trolling . . . better get to it . . . I need to lose some points, after all . . .
