Does Magic Really Exist?
Published on September 30, 2006 By Xythe In Religion
Houdini and David Copperfield are mentioned as legendary magicians. They supposedly work their art by manipulating objects and creating physical illusions. We can know how these “tricks” work, and anybody can learn them with enough patients, practice, and dexterity. I call this slight of hand and physical illusions; taking advantage of the limitations of the human eye.

Alchemists and medicine men were considered magicians in mid-evil times. Again, the mixing of physical substances that react to both the mental and physical body anyone can learn and perform. Today we call them chemists. This is not to say anything like a “love potion” exists in reality.

When I think of magic, I think of supernatural manipulation; something humans cannot do without a supernatural being intervening. Terms such as sorcery, necromancy, divination…etc. come to mind. These are magics we humans simply cannot perform without the help of some supernatural agent.

Take for example the old “girl in the case being sawed in half” trick. We all know how human magicians do this; with trickery. You see, “real” magic would involve no trickery what so ever. The girl would simply be bisected without harm, and meld back to a whole form at the end of the rite.

Fortunetellers and mystics use various mediums to perform their predictions. Again, “real” magic requires NO mediums. No crystal balls, no tarot cards, no astrology charts, no palm reading, no nothing. These mediums are not tools enabling the fortuneteller to perform their magic.

How is it then that we seem to actually see reports of what appears to be real magic? One example might be an evangelist or some holy person who performs the “laying of hands” to heal even the most extreme physical ailments. It’s impossible for this to happen, and there can be no trick. People are simply healed. The question is…how?

Understand, the following is nothing more than my simple opinion concerning the reality of real magic and nothing more. I make no claim of divine wisdom, nor do I claim anything I mention as fact. I will say however, that if some of the elements regarding magic cannot be accepted on faith, then true magic does not exist.

Simply stated, true magic cannot be performed without some supernatural intervention. All the crystal balls, wand waving, dancing rituals and what not, is nothing but hogwash. The person themselves is NOT performing the magic, but simply enlisting some supernatural being to make things happen by her/his request.

So, if the human isn’t performing the magic, how do the end results come about in reality? Remember, it takes supernatural intervention for true magic to take place. As a Christian, the only source of supernatural beings I know of is God and His kingdom; mostly angelic beings. Angels are the messengers of God, and have the ability to perform miracles, or magic. Simply put, they are capable of doing things we humans cannot even conceive of.

If you can swallow the existence of angels, then you need to include the 1/3 host of the fallen angels. I believe it is this 1/3 of the angelic host that is responsible for most of the real magic performed by human beings. The remainder would be performed by God and the Holy Spirit, or by the angels on Gods behalf.

God has made it pretty clear he does not want us messing around with the arcane. He does not want us enlisting supernatural beings to do things for us we can’t do for ourselves. God is a jealous god. If supernatural power is going to run through any human being, it will be by His hand or command only. In other words, God chooses what miracles or magic is to be performed within His creation. We ask God to do things for us when we pray, and these things may become reality in the form of blessings.

Well we certainly know God is not going to make love potions for us, and we know he is not going to disclose any given persons destiny to us. How then does it happen?

Imagine the scene of a person wanting to make a love potion. First this person needs all of the components to make the potion itself, and some incantation that empowers the fluid, causing a person to fall truly in love with the potion designer. Imagine this scene with me:

A sorceress huddled over her kettle, tossing in the various components, making the potion itself. Then she starts to mumble her incantation. (Keep in mind that angels can read our minds inherently.) The sorceress truly believes she is creating this working potion, but this is far from the case.

Some fallen angel is sitting around with its buddies, pointing and laughing at this sorceress saying, look at that silly human, thinks she can make a potion that causes another to fall in love with her”. The fallen angel, being opposed to God, and knowing full well He doesn’t want us messing with the arcane. This fallen angel lives for the moment you can screw up with God, and will do anything in his power to help you fall from grace. It’s his job!

Now the sorceress is just putting the final touches on her potion when the angel decides to make the potion real for you. Again, laughing to his buddies, “look, this moron of a sorceress really thinks she has made this potion. All these spell components and incantations are nothing but a joke. Let her think she really created the potion, when it's really me, and I’ll be there for her whenever she needs some more magic. When her day of judgment comes, we can sit here smiling when God tells her what really was happening all along. Perhaps if we are lucky, we can take her to the fiery pit with us!”

So, true magic really does exist. Unfortunately however, we humans cannot perform it. True magic needs to be performed by a supernatural being. Unless God answerers your prayer blessing you with a miracle, you are selling yourself to the forces of the fallen angels who perform magic on your behalf (you asked them to do it, but just never knew). Remember, the fallen angels know God does not want humans messing with arcane knowledge they cannot possibly know anything about. They are just waiting for you to try.

Dont even read the books...Let it all be...and bout that I am serious....You want to talk about "opening the doors" for vulnerability to supernatural things..Reading,and allowing your mind to open to the things you are reading and trying to understand is just as bad..

So do not read that Modern Magick,....let it be, and as I said..I am serious...

And for those that wish for Bible references that state Gods disdain for witchcraft. Here ya go:

Exd 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

Deu 18:11 Or a charmer , or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

There I'll reiterate what God has to say about all of this. So if you do believe in Him, and believe that His Word is True...then dont read anything ( informatinal or not ) that has been provided by or can be traced to witchcraft, magick, ( and all else that He has listed in the Bible ) . Whatever, you all are "big kids" just dont contradict yourselves.....

Exactly. Why read something that to God is profane? Unless that is, you are in direct rebellion to Him, then it would make sense.

Magick is prohibited in both the OT and the NT. Several words are used to describe magick. One key term is "kashap" a Hebrew verb. It's mentioned in Ex 7:11, Deut 18:10, Daniel 2:2 and Mal 3:5. Kashap means to practice magick or sorcery, use witchcraft or to enchant.

Another is a Hebrew noun "keshep" which means magick or magical arts, sorcery, soothsayer, spell, or witchcraft. You can find this in 2 Kings 9:22, Isa 47:9,12 and Micah 5:12. Consider God's displeasure over all this as recorded in his condemnation of Nivevah.....

Woe to the city of blood, full of lies, full of plunder, never without victims! The crack of whips, the clatter of wheels, galloping horses and jolting chariots! Charging cavalry, flashing swords and glittering spears! many casualties, piles of dead bodies without number people stumbling over the corpses-all because of the wanton lust of a harlot, alluring the mistress of sorceries, who enslaved natins by her prostitution and peoples by her witchcraft. I am against you, declares the Lord. "I will lift your skirts over your face. I will show the natins your nakedness and the kingdoms your shame. I will pelt you with filth, I will treat you with contempt and make you a spectacle. All who see you will flee from you and say, "Ninevah is in ruins-who will mourn for her?" Nahum 3:1-7.

In the NT there is an account of Ephesian converts to Christianity gathering together and burning all their books relating to magick. In Galations magick/witchcraft is placed alongside hatred, strife, and murder.

I'd say it would be a good thing to stay away from this stuff. Maybe this is where we get "book burning" from?

LITTLE WHIP

Au Contraire, bell ami, for I know all too well the realities of the spirit realm.
Back in my atheist and Scientology days ,I practiced traversing the Astral plane a great deal.
That these thing are true, I know for a fact, which is why I am so dead against them now.
God knows they exist, which is why there are His laws against them.

I also have many ghost stories I could tell, being visited by those who are in prison, but yet came to call anyway.
There are levels of dimension in the astral plane.....the here now......then was, and everything in between.
The terrible gray/black dimension where there are terrible beings.......grasping and clawing, where one has to fight and wrestle, kick and scream to get free from. To reach around and feel the cord is disconcerting to say the least.

I get the creeps just from thinking of those nights I spent there, to return with a sudden jolt, fighting to catch my breath.
These things are no joke. They are real. Even astral sex with women who now or even then, could have been other flesh women wandering in the astral plane.

So now, even so, I must insist that those wishing to envolve themselves in this endeavor, to stop.
For it leads to nowhere.
These things are real as I have said, and it is nothing to be trifled with.
God's laws are specific, and they are for a very good reason.
Adhere to them.

To make it short, it seems that scientists have now been able to replicate astral travel (out of body experiences) in the laboratory, by stimulating certain parts of the brain.

Interesting article LW, thank you. One thing that caught my attention:

"And while it may be tempting to invoke the supernatural when this body sense goes awry, he said the true explanation is a very natural one, the brain’s attempt to make sense of conflicting information."

Specifically the brains attempt to make sence of conflicting information. It's always been my beliefe that all people have all the knowledge of time ans space locked up inside our brains. Science has told us we use less than 10%of our brains. I figured the other 90% was locked up on purpose by the Designer of our flesh; the knowledge is there, we its just beyond our reach.

This thread in itself is a conflict for me. Thats why it's been difficult for me to respond. On one hand, I know the spiritual world does in fact exist, and am somewhat aware of whats out there (philisophically, not by actuall experience). On the other hand, even though life for me isn't all that great most of the time, I find comfort in knowing I can call on the Holy Spirit to bring me some measure of solitude.

I have mentioned that as a youth I brushed the surface of the occult, perhaps just enough to heed the warnings of the authors I have read. Just as you and others who have cautioned in this thread have done.

The Holy spirit as I know it is a powerful entity and has the ability to do about anything I could imagine. However, the Holy spirit will not do anything I request of it; I know this and wont disturb my relationship with it by asking such things.

So I find now that I am a bit older, and my faith is as strong as ever, I wonder if I could handle the spirit world. This is a difficult thing for me to deal with. God tells me via scripture to keep away from all forms of the occult. Yet he allows the means to do so to be available to me. If I pray with the Holy Spirit on this matter, the notion of studying certain occults do not exit my concious; nor does it grow stronger.

Even as I type this reply I feel confusion.

There's nothing "otherworldly" about it, fool. It can be replicated in a laboratory by electrically stimulating certain parts of the brain. So can the sensation of "spirits."

So if we can replicate it, it isnt bad??? Umm ok...wouldnt be calling anyone a fool on that note!

I respect the opinions of many who have responded to this article. Emperor and LW have mastered some part of that which entices me. Mr. Baker, KFC, and Pure I know are very strong in your faith. Orion, you are a facinating individual. I have participated in various threads time and time again with you. I hear you have partaken in that which LW anf the Emperor still practice, and that you have also forsaken those studies and concentrate soley on your Christian faith.

It seems as I can not be a faithful Christian and practice the occult; I suppose biblically I can understand this. But what actual harm can their come from studying the occult? Temptation?

Thats right, open mind = BAD. closed mind = GOOD.

What are you afraid of? That your own beliefs might prove to be groundless?

I fear God little girl. I am open minded. You want to discuss another religion?? Then fine with me. I am willing to study any article, and any book that you can provide to help further my knowledge on it.

And dont tell me I am closed minded. I am very open minded. But by not wanting to involve myself in something that God has said not to, is being obedient. Not closed minded...and umm ..learn to read before you post....

Now as for the other types of "magic" out there. I agree with what you said. As a young teen, I became intrigued by the thought of performing "magic" I even bought a few books.

Ok, so I didnt spell it with a "k" my bad. But none the less, I did my own research. I may have not studied every major or ancient type of magick, but I learned enough to know that it was something not to be dabbled with.

I know my own beliefs are not groundless thank you. And I am not saying that magick is groundless. I am sure there is a lot there to prove that it is real, and not some "myth" just full of wacko stories and beliefs. But however..I believe in God, and His Word the Holy Bible. ( I already know your take on the Bible from other blogs, so you dont have to waste your breath on that ) , and I dont NEED to research more about magick... God says leave it be, and as His child, I will do as my Father has told me.

So dont address your condescending remarks towards me...I dont care what you practice or want to believe. That is fine with me. I am simply putting forth what I believe...

You are something else...And simply put, unlike many...I am not impressed

That’s right. The picture in your sub-link, Little Whip, of the person rising from his bed WWW Link">Link, is exactly the same experience that I had, which I described on Adnauseam’s thread ‘Have you had any Supernatural experiences?’
WWW Link

I was “astral travelling”, it turns out. My senses were clearer and more alert than in my usual state of consciousness.

Regarding your point about scientists, they are now also being forced to accept the existence of ‘auric fields’, which our mystics have been talking about for centuries. Using a method called Kirlian photography, scientists can now take a photo of a healthy leaf, for example. They then chop off a part of the leaf, and when photographed again, the picture reveals the same outline as if the leaf were whole. This proves that living organisms have an ‘auric field’ – an etheric energy matrix – that transcends physical form.

There's nothing "otherworldly" about it

Too right. The Other Side is actually our real home. When we die we’ll see that this physical world is the true alien and foreign land. I think religious fundamentalists have a habit of over-dramatising what goes on beyond the veil, so to speak, as they so often claim that it’s chock-full of evil spirits and dark entities. But the Other Side is actually a lovely and natural place, full of light. The dark entities form an extreme minority there. It is the dark or rebellious spirits from the Other Side who make themselves known to us here more than the beings of light, though. This is a similar principle to how the extreme Islamic fundamentalists on earth, who cause much disruption and violence, cause a bigger splash and make themselves known more than the quiet, good natured Muslims, who actually form the majority.

I think that it’s only because the Other Side is unknown to us, (or at least to our 5 mortal senses), that we are so wary and afraid of it. Naturally, the unknown makes us feel afraid and wary. (Or maybe it’s because we choose to read the Bible literally, and believe that it is infallible and inerrant, but that’s our prerogative.)

Is this by design, or just a fact of nature?

Is this by design, or just a fact of nature?

By design, Xythe, for sure. God designed and created the whole system, and God designs everything perfectly and with good purpose - including the ‘veil’ which obscures us from seeing the whole Truth.

So what might the purpose of feeling so afraid and wary about the unknown be? Probably so we turn in humble trust and faith toward God. Such fear makes us realise that there are things in life that are bigger than us, and that we cannot yet control or understand. This naturally forces us - like little children - to put our trust in a power that is greater than ourself, which, in accordance with our intuition (which is like our soul’s inner-compass), leads us to God, who we intuitively trust knows everything, sees all, and has the ability to take control and guide us.

If we are afraid, we get on our knees to God. Thus fear has served its purpose. It basically forces us to get our priorities right and builds more inner muscle within us than if everything was 'fear-free' and clear.

Not that I'm afraid you will Xythe.....but

DON'T BITE THE APPLE!

God is clear that He will bring to light that which is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men/women's hearts.

Yet you have referred to me as 'evil' and 'satanic' etc.

oh ya? Where did I say this?

shove my personal beliefs down other people's throats, pronouncing them condemned if they don't swallow.

oh ya? And where have I done this?

If I remember correctly, I have constantly stated that I cannot force anyone to believe. Now I've said that so many times, I'm sure you've picked it up somewhere along the way. But I understand it might be hard for you to respond to something like that. It doesn't fit your profile of me.

I don't have the patience for spiritual infants who spit and squall when asked to think outside their tired old paradigms.

now exactly who's the one spitting and squalling?

To: AndyBaker

if you’re talking about Christ, the Spirit of God, who dwelt within Jesus the man – i.e. the Word made flesh - then you're not right. God, as Jesus, taught humanity many profound and esoteric truths. The crucifixion, amongst many other things demonstrated that God intimately shares and understands the world's suffering and pain. The resurrection demonstrated that death is not the end, and that a new body and new Creation awaits us after death. Christ is God’s way-shower and redeemer.

This is true for you, as a Christian (I presume) or at least one sympathetic to the Christion theology. I was a Christian. I am not a Christian now. And in my not being a Christian I have repudiated the Christ I foolishly worshipped. Jesus the Christ is not God, nor the Word of God. Jesus the Christ is a God-form, created by the conviction of his believers and the persistence of that conviction over two thousand years. So far from Jesus the Christ being the instrument (the Word spoken by God through which the universe was created), it is in fact Man that served as the instrument through which God permitted the creation of Jesus the Christ.

Jesus taught no esoteric truth. He taught the simplest morality, readily extracted from the Torah and the Wisdom books of the Hebrews. 'Esoteric' is an adjective, meaning intended for or understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge. It derives from the Greek 'esoterikos', itself derived from eso ‘within’. In other words, you're claiming that Jesus taught Occult knowledge to those who were an elite minority - when in fact Jesus the man is recorded as teaching in public, and in terms the simplest and least educated could understand.

Dear me. Shall I die of a broken heart now, or wait till later? Later, I think. And by all means do, please, continue to believe in the figment you are yourself partly responsible for creating (since it's through faith that the gods - all of them, especially the ones that are dead - are constantly recreated).
