Yes, the battery saga continues.
Sony has agreed to help financially with the Dell recall and another by Apple resulting from faults with Sony batteries. However, a Sony representative denied that the blame for Dell's battery cell problems lay completely with the Japanese manufacturer.
"It is the configuration. We use the same batteries in our Vaios, and have our own safeguards against potential overheating. Other manufacturers which use the same cells haven't come forward with any issues. On rare occasions, a short circuit can occur, but this is affected by systems configurations found in different laptops," the representative said.
Firstly, why would Sony agree to help absorb the potential $170-$255 Million dollar cost to replace their own batteries?
Do Dells and Apples have the same defect in their system configurations that no other laptop maker including Sony has?
Sony said the recalls had arisen because of microscopic metal particles in the recalled battery cells coming into contact with other parts of the battery cell, leading to a short circuit within the cell.
"The potential for this to occur can be affected by variations in the system configurations found in different notebook computers," Sony said.
Uhh these heating and exploding issues, that come to a tune of some 255 million dollars is in my opinion hardly a "rare ocurrance". Besides, Dell and Apple have been putting out laptops for years and I really have not heards of any of these "rare ocurrances"?
And guess what, two reports of smoking or flaming batteries on Sony laptops surfaced this week, one reported by a Kansas City television station and one, via e-mail, by a CNET News.com reader.
Who will Sony have to blame now? Maybe Sony is a bit more than partially responsible for this battery crisis?
Face it Sony, at least this batch of YOUR batteries is messed up! Step up to the plate!
"The batteries were contaminated and were no good no matter what you did with them," Dell said. "We know the batteries, under rare circumstances, catch fire, (which is why we recalled them)."
So, I wonder what the Japan based technology company plans to say or do next?
I just cant stand it when a manufacturer of a product I use wont take responsibility for theur product, and tries to pass the buck. Its very dihonerable. I wonder if the blade will be passed around a certain CEOs office?
In either event, this really dampens my opinion of Sony and their products.
